Introduction-:

The plucked six stringed instrument is known as a guitar which is probably originated in Spain early in the 16th century. The word guitar is derived from the “guitarra latina”, which is a late-medieval instrument with the waisted body and four strings. The early guitar was narrower and deeper than the modern guitar, with a less pronounced waist. The guitar is usually played by using plectrum or pick, but some guitarists prefer to play with their fingers. In this article, I will try to delve my views about different types of guitar with their body parts along with their functions and which type of music can be played by using different guitars.

Body Parts Of Guitar-:

If you don’t know proper vocabulary, it would be difficult to know where to place your hands or talk to your fellow guitarists about anything. So, the most important thing you need to learn is the names of different parts of guitar, so that you can easily follow any video lesson about guitar.

The parts of guitar are as follows-:
  1. Headstock
  2. Pegs
  3. Tuning keys
  4. Nut
  5. Neck
  6. Finger board
  7. Frets
  8. Metalic bars
  9. fret marker
  10. Finger board cut way
  11. Body or frame
  12. Strings
  13. Sound hole
  14. Anti Scratcher plate
  15. Bridge
  16. Saddle
  17. Bridge pins or stud
  18. End pin

The first section of the guitar is called headstock. It consists of tuning keys which are used to tune the instrument by tightening and loosing the wires and pegs through which strings are attached.

The nut is the white strip which works as a joint to the neck and the headstock. The middle section of the guitar is known as the neck. The front side of the neck is known as fret board. The fret board consists of frets, which help your fingers find the right spot to play guitar. The frets are 21 in number. The metallic bars between the frets are used to differentiate between two frets. Then there are some white coloured dots on the frets to remember the fret numbers easily. The placements of the dots are as follows-:

  • The first dot is on the 3rd fret
  • Second dot is on the 5th fret
  • Third dot is on the 7th fret
  • Fourth dot is on the 9th fret
  • Then next dot is on the 12th fret. 12th fret has 2 dots.
  • Next dot is on the 15th fret
  • The last dot is on the 17th fret

The biggest part of the guitar is known as the body or frame of guitar. The hole in the centre of the body is known as the sound hole. On the right side of the sound hole there is an anti scratcher plate, which is used to protect the frame of guitar from getting scratched when we play the strings with plectrum. The body of guitar also consist of the bridge, saddle and the studs that helps to hold the strings. Then there is a end pin which is the last part used to place a guitar on the floor properly. Another function of end pin is to attach the strap which is used to properly hold the guitar while standing.

For those who play an electric guitar, you will find most of the parts on your guitars. But the frame or body section of an electric guitar has some different parts from those of an acoustic guitar. These are-:

  1. Pickups
  2. Potentiometer
  3. Pickup selector switch
  4. Input jack.

Pickups capture the string vibrations and convert sounds through amps. Potentiometer consistes of a volume tone controller and a vibrato bar which is used to control the volume and tones. The pickup selector switch chooses pickups and therefore determines the sound. The input jack is where you plug in your keyboard. The output jack is where you plug in the speakers.

String Numbers and Names-:

There are six strings on the guitar. The thickest string which is on the top when you hold the guitar in playing position is the 6th string. The string names after the 6th string are 5th 4th 3rd 2nd and the last string is known as 1st string. In terms of tuning the strings, they are tuned as the alphabets as 6th string is tuned as E sound. 5th string is tuned as A sound. Then 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st strings are tuned as D, G, B and E respectively.

Types of Guitars-:

There are mainly four types of guitars-:
1)The Classical Guitar-:

The guitar which is used in classical music is known as classical guitar. An acoustic wooden string instrument with strings made of gut or nylon, it is similar to the acoustic and electric guitars, both use metal strings. These guitars are derived the Spanish instrument gittern in the fifteenth and sixteenth century. For a right-handed player the traditional classic has 12 frets clear of the body. The modern steel guitar has fourteen frets.

2) The Acoustic Guitar-:

This guitar is generally used for popular music. It has six strings passing from tuning pegs over instrument’s neck which is marked with the lines called frets. Music ranging from classical to rock and roll, to bluegrass and folk can be played using acoustic guitars. The strings used in acoustic guitars can be steel or nylon. Nylon strings are normally used for classical and related styles of music. Steel strings are typically used for rock and folk type of music.

3) The Electric Guitar-:
The electric guitar

The electric guitar was invented by George Beauchamp in 1931. It is string instrument played by a plectrum and sometimes with fingers. Electric guitar consists of electric pickups which are wire wound magnets that helps to change the vibration of strings into electric current. this electric current then sent to the amplifier that converts the current into sound. The main parts of electric guitar are the neck, the pickups, the tuners, the bridge, the volume knobs and the tone knobs.

4) The Bass Guitar-:

Bass guitar is related to the electric guitar. The shape of bass guitar is similar to electric guitar, the only difference is bass guitar is longer than electric guitar. Many parts are similar in bass guitar as in electric guitar. The bass guitar has 4 strings and 4 tuning pegs while the electric guitar has six strings. The strings in bass guitar are named as E, A, D and G. Lower scale music are played by using bass guitar such as rock, pop, jazz fashion and many more.
